You know a thing I wish word processing software could do?

I wish there was a tool which would scan through your document and insert a marker every thousand words – so when you’re trying to divide a 7000 word chapter into two nicely-portioned pieces, you could see where you should start looking for a fold line, rather than just guesstimating by the number of pages.

I’d also like an option for this to happen automatically as you write, so I’d get gentle nudges as the chapter is growing.

Huge thanks to @imayjustbejamesmoriarty for recommending this extension for Google Docs. It literally does both things I wanted. I’m so pleased.

I now have a new chapter of Sheltering Tree open and there are little markers in the margin every 500 words. 

This is the best thing ever. 

UHHHH THIS IS SO GREAT???! I was really feeling the need for something like this when I was writing my advent calendar contribution! Awesome.
