Benedict Cumberbatch – Sky Arts Awards. (Source)

Well, as far as the people who’ve won this award is concerned, it’s extraordinary. I mean you’re talking about the likes of Dame Helen Mirren, Dame Judi Dench, Julie Walters – the last time I was here, she accepted this award. Never in a million years did I think a few years down the line it would be mine. I was convinced that some fans – I don’t know – had got hold of the internet or somebody was pretending to be Melvyn Bragg and it was all a bit of a hoax. Although I wasn’t told on April 1, but I did check the diary. But once I realised it really was me, I thought ‘wow, well it’s yet another spur to try and live up to the promise and accolade that this honour brings on you’. Another pressure, but in a good way. It’s an inspiring thing. I’ve got to be in a room full of people that would be an award enough, let alone doing my job which I find is rewarding enough. And this is just an embarrassment of riches, but I’m really flattered.
